LIIAR Analysis of Vibe Magazine

L: The photograph is a close up of the rapper T.I, he is making eye contact with the reader. He has his hands crossed and he has an angry look in his eyes as if he is not happy with someone. This draws the reader in because it makes you want to know why he is not happy, and who he is not happy with. Similarly to NME, the masthead is in a red, with a bold font. Red stands out to the reader because reds conatates danger so it immediately grabs your attention. The masthead is positioned at the top of the page, as it is in most magazines so you know that is the title of the magazine.
I: The publisher of Vibe Magazine is InterMedia Partners. They are a very small company, and they don't publish many magazines. They only bought a share in Vibe Magazine in 2009, because the magazine had closed down and they re-published the magazine.
I: Vibe Magazine is a Hip Hop and R&B magazine. So one of there values will be to inform readers about R&B/Hip Hop artists. I'm sure like other magazines, for example NME they want to tell the reader about up coming Hip Hop artists. I think there are a number of reasons why the magazine's name is Vibe. One of these could be that Vibe is a Hip Hop magazine and the name Vibe could be referring to a dance you might do in a club when listening to Hip Hop music. Or perhaps the name Vibe could be inferring that the magazine has a positive vibe.
A: Vibe Magazine predominantly aims at the young culture who follow the Hip Hop Scene. This is between 16-24.
R: In this copy of Vibe Magazine the featured artist is the rapper T.I. By the way he is looking at the camera I think the magazine is trying to make out that T.I is a bit rebellious. This point is backed up by the what T.I is quoted saying in the left third of the magazine. He is talking about not liking being compared to 'Tupac'. Vibe Magazine represents the overall genre of Hip Hop/ R&B in a very positive way. Vibe gives you information about big name artists like Kerri Hilson and Jay Z, and has interviews and special features on them.

LIIAR Analysis of The Front Cover of Kerrang Magazine

Kerrang Magazine's genre is heavy metal and rock. So It's not quite the genre which I want my music magazine to be, but it has some bands and artists which I would feature in my magazine. For example on the front cover of this copy, there is the lead singer of Fall Out Boy, and they would come under the indie/rock genre. I am going to do a LIIAR analysis of this copy of Kerrang.

L: The photograph is a close up of the Artist and he is looking straight at the camera and therefore making eye contact with the reader. He is also licking an ice cream which links in with the caption under the main feature headline which says: 'life is sweet', because ice creams are sweet. The artist in the picture is wearing a red t-shirt and red connates danger so perhaps it's to give him a rebelious look. The tattoos you can see on the artists wrists would also add to this rebellious look. For the masthead the word 'Kerrang' is in white with a black background. The font for the masthead is quite a bold font with rough edges and lines going across the writing. I think this is to enthersise  the fact Kerrang is a heavy metal and rock magazine so it's quite rough. The masthead is positioned at the top of the page. However above the masthead it tells you about the free give away which is a c.d and which bands are featured on the c.d, this is called a skyline. This is quite a strange place to put this, because usually they are placed lower down the page. I think the producers of the magazine have done this so that when you look at the title; 'Kerrang' then you immediately notice that they are giving away a free c.d and it might make you want to buy the magazine because you want the freebie.  Also on the left hand third of the front cover it tells you about the free posters you can get, and it shows an example of one of these posters.
I: The publisher for Kerrang Magazine is the Bauer Media Group. The Bauer Media Group are a worldwide company, and they operate in 15 different countries. They are based in Hamburg, Germany.
I: Kerrang informs people about popular rock/metal bands, and it often features interviews and articles with them. The magazine also writes reviews on new albums and tracks. Upcoming bands and artists are also often featured in Kerrang, however it's not one of there prime values unlike NME Magazine. There aren't many rock/ metal magazines and Kerrang is the leader in the market.
A: The target audience for Kerrang Magazine is 15-19 year old's. I think the younger target audience are the reason why Kerrang often give away freebies because it would particularly appeal to the younger audience.
R: Fall Out Boy is the band featured in this copy of Kerrang Magazine. In my opinion they are represented as being quite out there and different. This is shown by the picture on the front cover because it shows the lead singer licking an ice cream, this is a strange picture and therefore shows them to be different. It also says that 'life is sweet' for Fall Out Boy and as the reader you would want to know why this is.

The Target Audience for my Music Magazine

There are a wide range of music magazines, which target many different age ranges. For example Uncut magazine aims there magazine at 30-45 year olds. This is shown by the bands and artists which are featured in the magazine. There are interviews with Paul Weller and The Rolling Stones. Whereas a magazine like Kerrang is aimed at 15-19 year olds. I want to base my magazine on NME Magazine because it is similar to what I want my magazine to be like. NME Magazine is aimed at 16-24 year olds so that is the same target audience I want my magazine to be. I think people of this age would like a number of different things to feature in a music magazine. For example interviews, special features, and album and track reviews. To appeal to the younger audiance of my magazine (16 year olds) then I could perhaps have prizes and special offers for them to win.

My Genre and LIIAR Analysis of Front Cover of NME

My selected music genre is going to be  indie/rock. This genre mainly focus' on bands, for example the Arctic Monkeys, Arcade Fire and Bombay Bicycle Club. However there are also some solo artists which I could feature, like Miles Kane and Florence and the Machine. I would also like to feature a lot of upcoming bands as well, and saying which bands are going to be big in the future.
This copy of NME shows the band The Artic Monkeys. They are a band from the type of genre I would like my magazine to be about. I am going to do a LIIAR analysis of this magazine.

L: The photograph on the front of the magazine, shows all of the band sat on a wall. It is centred in the middle of the page and It is in colour. All of the members are making eye contact with the viewer of the magazine. The effect on the picture gives off, quite a rustic/vintage look to the magazine. The clothes they are wearing also gives off this effect. The masthead of the magazine is in a bold font, and is in red with a white outline. Red is an interesting colour to use because red connates danger, this makes it stand out even more. Perhaps NME used this colour to give  a rebelious look to the bands on there front cover. The main feature headline of this copy of NME is in a gold coloured font. This could be to show that the Arctic Monkeys are the number one band around, and are in first place, therefore why the writing is in gold. The cover lines are at the bottom of the page are in red and white. The artist which is involved is in red and information about this section is in white. This has been done to colour code with the masthead, this gives a nice flow to the magazine.
I: The publisher of NME Magazine is a company called IPC Media. On the web homepage for IPC Media you can find out all the other magazine which they produce. They do a whole range of magazines; from music magazines which aim to a wide audience, to Motor Boats Monthly which obviously aim at a select, slightly smaller audience.IPC Media are a national company because most of their magazines aim at the British public. They produce over 60 iconic brands, this reaches almost two thirds of women in the UK and 42 percent of men in the UK.
I:The name of NME tells us a lot about the ideology of the magazine, it stands for 'New Musical Express'.This implies that NME tells you about new upcoming bands and artists and it gives you it fast; 'express'. The target audience for NME Magazine is mainly men aged 16-24, but some people may  buy it as a one off if they like the particular band/artist featured.
A:  The target audience for NME Magazine is mainly men aged 16-24, but some people may  buy it as a one off if they like the particular band/artist featured. The IPC Media website also tells us that 65% of the readers of NME are males, and 23% of readers are aged 16-24. NME Magazine is obviously aimed at the younger generation rather then the older, this is made obvious by the types of bands that are featured in the magazines.
R: In this copy of NME the main focus is on the fact that NME has spent 24 hours in the studio with the Arctic Monkeys, and they are a changed band. This would attract many readers because they would want to find how the Arctic Monkeys are a changed band. However if NME were doing a section on a not so well know band they may just do a far more simple interview because not many people will know information about them.

Evaluation For College Magazine

Wyke College Magazine Evaluation

The Front Cover of My Magazine
The front cover of my magazine shows a picture of a student from Wyke stood in front of the entrance to the college building. I felt this would be a good place to have on the front cover of my magazine. There were a number of reasons why I did this. One was because it shows off the new impressive college building. I felt this was an important thing to do because for anyone who does not attend Wyke, seeing my front cover will immediately let them know about the impressive building we have here at Wyke. Another reason why I chose the picture at the front of the college was because I had the idea of using the college logo on the front of the building as the masthead in my college magazine. This immediately lets the reader know what the magazine is about and which college it is associated with. I felt it was important that the student on the front cover of my magazine was dressed fairly smartly and looked happy. This is because he is representing the college so he needs to look as if he has a fun time at college. I made the student in the picture hold onto some folders and books to show that he is studying at Wyke. The sub lines on my front cover tell people some of the things which are included in my magazine. For example interviews which are in the magazine and events happening outside of college like the Wyke Party.
Advertising and Virtual Version Of The Magazine
There a number of ways in which I would advertise my magazine. One way I could advertise my magazine is by simply putting up posters around college saying that there is a college magazine for sale and the price which I am selling it for. Another way I could advertise it is by setting up a viral campaign. In this I could advertise the magazine on the college website. I was even thinking that you could set up a virtual version of the magazine online. Students could inform me that they want the virtual copy of the magazine and I could either email to them or put it on the moodle system for them to read. I was thinking that the virtual copy of my magazine could have a few differences to it, compared to the written version. For example the virtual version could have videos from the football or rugby matches, or videos of dance routines which students from Wyke have performed.
Overall my magazine would give college students an interesting outlook on college life. They would be able to find out information of upcoming events, for example parties and meetings. The magazine would also offer them the chance to read interviews with members of staff and other pupils from Wyke. This could be sports players or students simply talking about what they think of Wyke and the courses they are studying.

My Front Cover Images

I took a number of images, but I decided that theese four were the best ones. All of the pictures are medium close ups. In the background I have managed to get the impressive college building and also the name of the college which is obviously Wyke. I was thinking about using the college name in the background perhaps in the title for my magazine.

i decided not to post some of the images. There were a number of reasons for this. For example on some my model was not looking or had blinked, and on some I simply decided that the background to the image didn't look right and would therefore not be suitable for my college magazine.

The Target Audience, Price and How Often It's Published

I am choosing Wyke college as the college for my magazine. This is bcause Wyke is a very good college, were you can work and have fun. Also the college campus is very impressive because it has new buildings, and very good facillities. Another reason why I chose Wyke for my college magazine, is simply because it will be easier for me to take photos as I am at the college for most of the week, so i can take pictures in my free periods or at luch time.  Members of Wyke college are E demographic. This means that students are either casual labourers or unemployed. Most people who attend Wyke have outer directed or inner directed Value Life Styles. Outer directed (VALS) mean that they are belongers, emulators and achievers. Whereas inner-directed (VALS) are experimentals, sociallity concious and they are themselves. Using 'Maslows Hierachy Of Needs' chart, I would class most people either in the social, esteem or self actualiseaon groups. This is beause most people at Wyke belong to part of a group(Social) i.e part of a goup in class or part of group in a sports team. The majority of students at Wyke also have admiration for others, and self esteem (Esteem). Pupils at Wyke also have the need to suceed, and become what they want to be (Self-Actualisation). Due to this reaseacrh i have decided that the target audience for my college magazine is going to be for people aged 16-19, as this is the age of people who go to Wyke college. My college magazine will be aimed at males and females because both males and females attend Wyke college. I am going to price my magazine at £1.50 per copy. This is because people at the ages of 16-19 generally don't have that much money so I didn't want to price my magazine too highly because otherwise no one would buy it. However I didn't want to price it too low, otherwise I would be ripping myself off, so I decided on a price in the middle. I am going to publish my magazine monthly, as this way there will be plenty to write about each month, and I can do monthly updates on the football, rugby and netball teams. I was originally thinking of doing a weekly magazine, but I decided not to because I don't think I would have enough to write about and the magazines would just be boring. I also think many people would begin to find the magazine a bit tedious if there was a new issue coming out every week. By it coming out monthly people should easily be able to spare £1.50 month to buy my college magazine.

Comparing Two College Magazines (LIIAR)

I am going to compare two college magazines, and do a LIIAR analysis of them.

The first front cover I have chosen is from an American College's magazine which is inventively called 'College'. Although its quite a boring name, it does get straight down to the point about what the magazine is about. The masthead of the magazine is in bold capital letters, and the colour is in red. This makes it stand out from the crowd, because red is a bright colour. Also the colour red has connotations with danger so it immediately catches the readers attention because of this.
The main picture of the front cover(splash) in the magazine is a medium close up of the girl. She is wearing a red t-shirt which cleverly colour co-ordinates with the masthead. This makes the magazine flow from masthead to the main image. The piucture dominates the page so you cannot miss the girl in the image. The background of the image is out of focus, so the reader immediately knows what the main focus of the magazine is, which is student life at the college.
The cover lines of the magazine let us understand information which is included in the magazine, and tell us about articles included in the magazine. The cover lines on this magazine are in blue and black. The main title of the cover line is in blue and the information included in the article and the names of people interviewed are in black. I like this because the blue, colour co-ordinates with the woman in the picture's shorts. This again gives off this idea of the magazine flowing. The black coloured writing gives the magazine a more formal feel to it and I like this because I think it's important that the magazine needs to be taken seriously. The subject of the cover lines also tell us who the magazine is aimed at. Many of them talk about student issues such as, being pregnant at a young age and smoking. This would appeal to the target audience because issues like this will pop up in many  of the students  at the college lives. I feel the magazine is aimed more at girls rather than boys. This is because the picture is of a girl, and some of the issues discussed are only for girls. For example the '15 and pregnant article'. However the fact that 'College' magazine uses black and blue fonts shows that boys can still read the magazine if they wish because these colours are usually associated with boys.
The magazine is representing the college so it's important that the girl on the front cover looks happy and pleased. This shows that she is enjoying college life and will promote the college as a positive place were people can go and be happy, but also learn at the same time. Something else which I noticed is that the girl is wearing a football shirt which could  be the college football teams shirt. This shows that there is sport at the college, and it also shows the commitment of the girl, that she is wearing the football shirt on the front cover of the magazine. On the t-shirt it says 'I love SMU'. This could be something to do with the college and it is promoting it by it being on the front cover of the college magazine.

The second magazine I have chosen is another copy of the magazine 'College'. However It's very different to the previous magazine I LIIAR analysed.

This copy of the magazines masthead, is in a different colour to the previous copy I talked about. This time the  masthead is in yellow. The yellow colour stands out against the dark background, and catches the readers attention because its bright and bold.
The splash on the front cover is different to the splash on the previous 'College' magazine front cover. This picture is from the waist up so therefore is just a close up, were as on the other copy of 'College' the picture was a medium close up and went down to just above the woman's knees. Again colour co-ordination is used. The man in the pictures jacket colour co-ordinates with the dark black background. The splash really dominates the page. However I don't think it has quite the same affect as the previous copy of 'College'. I don't think it flows quite as nicely, however I do think it works just not as successfully. The man in picture is really in focus. This makes him really stand out and immediately lets the reader know what the magazine is about. There is a light glow on the man's forehead which again gives off this effect that the man is happy, and it genreally puts him in a positive light.
The cover lines of this version of 'College' are in a different colour to the ones in the previous copy. This time the cover lines are in yellow and white. Another difference is that in the previous copy of the college magazine, the blue coloured writing was used for the title of the articles, and the black coloured writing gave you some more information about what was included in the article. However on this version of 'College' both the yellow coloured writing and the white coloured writing is used as the colour of the titles. Personally I don't like this because I think it's confusing, and I feel they should have just used one colour for the titles. The subject of these titles, are similar to the ones in the first copy of 'College' in that they are to do with student life, and things they would be interested in. For example there are articles to do with mobile phones, college culture and an article on 'how to make money on campus'. These articles seem to particularly appeal to the male audience. There is also a cover line which is shaped like a splat of paint, which is advertising paint balling, which again appeals to the male audience as going paintballing is traditionally associated with the male audiance.
Again this magazine is representing the college. So it's important that the man in the picture looks happy like the girl did on the other copy of the magazine. The man in the picture also looks smart and stylish which is important for the college to show that people like this attend there college. The man in the splash also looks very in shape, which means he probably plays sports at the college. Also the fact that he is holding books shows that he can balance life playing sports and also study his subjects. I also think the fact that the man is wearing a Christian cross around his neck shows that he is most probably a sensible and moral person, which is good for the college to show that sensible people attend there college. It also shows that people from all backgrounds of society are accepted at the college, what ever there religion.
